Safe Space Nation

Michael Lumish

I continue to be deeply disappointed in the contemporary western-left.

It's the hypocrisy. The self-righteous indignation. The anti-white racism. The antisemitic anti-Zionism. The treating of "people of color" like they're small children. The growing opposition to freedom of speech.

The illiberalism.

The Left has lost itself.

There was a time when the Left stood for freedom. When I was a kid it was always the conservative right-wing that represented ideological rigidity. The Right was stodgy and humorless and racist and dull and restrictive... or so it seemed to many of us at the time.

It was the Right that gave us Richard Nixon, after all.

But now everything has switched!

Now it is the Left that tends to be that way with their "trigger warnings" and thumb sucking "safe spaces." Their gender neutral pronouns. Their deplatforming of speakers. Their loathing of alternative viewpoints and their disinclination to debate or discuss beyond narrow strictures of acceptability.

They're like a bunch of old biddies patrolling the words that we may use or even the hairstyles that we may sport.

The American Left has become some sort-of twenty-first-century version of Tom Sawyers' Aunt Polly, making sure that you've washed behind your ears.

I've read where the generation following the "millennials" are more open-minded than their older brothers and sisters. I certainly hope so because the current moment reminds me of nothing so much as the Red Scare of the 1950s.

We are going through a "moral panic" in the United States in which people are searching for Nazis and Klansmen and White Supremacists under their bed or lurking in the closet.

It is obnoxious, politically self-serving and intrusive into the lives of others.

Much of the Left should take a permanent retreat to the Safe Space of their choosing.

That way, at least, they will be less likely to annoy the rest of us.

  1. Ayup!
And your analogy is a good one.
For crying out loud, Berkeley is my alma mater. And although the Left viewpoint was always dominant in those days I could at least here debate from both sides wherein I would at least have to spend a little time questioning my own assumptions. I even went one evening to an event featuring David Horowitz, and even when a few people crashed the event they at least attempted to challenge him rather than shut him up.
Look at it now - more "common knowledge."
The kind of thing Dave Rubin speaks of here is what drives me mad.

    1. I'm not sure if Shapiro has started speaking, yet, but Lauren Southern is on hand with her video camera and Milo is coming soon.

Apparently the whole school is practically on lock down. They have a bunch of cops and 3 or 4 helicopters AND for the first time in 20 years the police have permission to use pepper spray.

We'll see what, if anything, Antifa has to say about all of this.

  2. It was inevitable. The Left will always eat it's own. History shows us this. Since their natural enemies, the right, will fight back and maybe eat them, they have to start in the center and work leftwards. Yum, Liberals.

    1. It seems to me that the American Left is doing now what the Right did in the middle of the last century... which is to say, it has become self-righteously indignant.

I don't respond well to that shit.

    2. Could be that you have grown older and wiser Michael...the Left are still the same shit heads as they were 40/90 years ago....perhaps more so then, than they are now. (With Respect) )

    3. Holy shit!

      Are you kidding me?

I am emphatically NOT getting older and wiser.

On the contrary, I am getting younger and dumber.

I am like Merlin... living backwards thru time.

You don't want to see the future!

      :O)

  3. Again though....if this is the future they think they need then have at it. I was reading that SJW oriented upperclass liberal arts colleges are beginning to experience enrollment drops. Oberlin for instance missed their enrollment target by 11%. Now certainly the world doesn't need another 80 largely white upper class liberal liberal arts majors who spend more than $260,000, if indeed they manage to graduate in 4 years. In Oberlin terms that translates to 48 fewer rich liberal gals and 32 fewer rich liberal guys. Maybe they went to other liberal schools. Or maybe they weren't liberal at all and opted out for a more mainstream education where centrists, moderates conservatives can thrive. In any case, it's a win win. The world doesn't need these schools and won't suffer if or when they're gone.
